I used to be the teacher who fought against school advisory. Looking back, I wasn't resisting relationship-building—I was afraid of failing at it. As a chemistry teacher, I knew how to connect through my subject, but I had no idea how to build relationships with students I didn't teach. What I thought was defiance was actually survival. This is the story of how one simple shift changed everything and ultimately inspired the creation of the Peer Impact Program.

When my son was asked what learning would look like without teachers, he didn’t have an answer. That moment revealed a bigger issue: schools may be teaching students to follow directions—but not how to lead themselves.

At a mother-son evening filled with games, challenges, and connection, I observed a powerful lesson in leadership: when winning becomes the only goal, fairness, collaboration, and shared success are lost. Here’s what this taught me about guiding young leaders.
